Su origen data de 1954, fecha en que se crea la Escuela de Agronomía utilizando los recursos materiales y humanos del Plan Chillán, que fueran puestos a disposición de la universidad mediante un convenio firmado entre ésta, el Ministerio de Agricultura y el Instituto de Asuntos Interamericanos de Estados Unidos.

Está ubicado en Chillán, centro geográfico de la agricultura chilena, en un predio de 96 hectáreas distante a dos kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, cinco minutos del aeropuerto y a una hora y media de los puertos marítimos de Talcahuano y de Lirquén. Emplazado en el corazón del agro, se convierte en el único centro con misión de desarrollar al más alto nivel las Ciencias Agropecuarias en el país y convierte a esta ciudad de 175.000 habitantes, en uno de los más importantes centros universitarios del sur de Chile. Consciente de los cambios en la agricultura como área de desarrollo económico, el Campus abarca todo el espectro de disciplinas profesionales que requiere el agro del futuro.
Legal status
La primera manifestación oficial de esta iniciativa se encuentra en Acta de Sesión del Honorable Consejo Universitario de fecha de 21 de junio de 1954.
Functions, occupations and activities
El Campus Chillán posee edificios administrativos, salas de clases, auditorio, laboratorios de alta tecnología, estaciones experimentales especializadas por ámbito de acción, oficinas docentes y campos deportivos, con más de 30.000 metros cuadrados construidos, distribuidos entre árboles y jardines de un hermoso y antiguo parque. También, posee toda suerte de recursos para permitir y facilitar la creación, estudio y bienestar estudiantil en uno de los Centros de Enseñanza Superior más prestigioso del país.

Su constante desarrollo, hizo necesaria la creación de otras carreras universitarias afines a las actividades agropecuarias, forestales y complementarias al desarrollo de la región, naciendo Medicina Veterinaria en 1973, Ingeniería Forestal en 1977 (actualmente en Concepción) Ingeniería Civil Agrícola en 1988, Ingeniería Agroindustrial en 2005, Ingeniería Comercial en 2005, Derecho en 2006, Ingeniería en Alimentos en 2009, Ingeniería Ambiental en 2010, y finalmente en el año 2013 la Carrera de Enfermería.
