Realizó sus estudios en la Escuela Agrícola “El Vergel” de Angol, de donde egresó en el año 1947 con el título de Técnico Agrícola, especializado en viveros forestales y frutales. Permaneció en “El Vergel” durante 10 años.

Se dedicó a actividades forestales privadas, sirviendo después el cargo de Inspector de la Compañía Frutícola de Angol,
Ingresó al DTICA en abril de 1953, trabajando en plantaciones forestales de carácter experimental desde Aconcagua a Llanquihue.
En julio de 1953 se incorporó al Plan Chillán junto con el asesor del punto 4º, estuvo a cargo de la organización del vivero forestal del que fue administrador.
